My recent flight on Fiji Airways was my first ever flight with them. As someone who has travelled the world constantly for the last 20 years, it surprised even me that I had never flown them.
So, when they announced their brand new A350-900 aircraft and in conjunction with that, their brand-new Business Class suite and service, I booked myself and my daughter straight away.
We actually flew from Melbourne to Sydney on a connecting domestic flight with Qantas Airways. Fiji Airways, just like Qantas is part of the One World group of airlines.
On arrival into Sydney Domestic Airport, we had to transfer across to Sydney International Terminal. There are a few ways to do this, however the easiest way is to go to the International Transfer Desk at the Domestic Terminal and take the internal bus across to International. This is only scheduled every 30 minutes so it can make a connection quite tight (which we experienced!)
(On a side note – other ways are to take the bus outside the terminal or the train located below the Domestic terminal to International – the following stop).
We already had our boarding passes for the Sydney to Nadi flight FJ910, so we headed through security and straight to the Qantas Business Class Lounge. (Fiji Airways does not have its own lounge at Sydney Airport so Business Class passengers and Elite Status passengers use Qantas Business Lounge).
After a quick stop here (a really quick stop as our Qantas connecting flight was delayed) we boarded our flight to Fiji.
From the get go, Fiji Airways shined. The staff were kind, caring and very attentive. It felt like a very fresh experience. The pre take-off drinks we offered as well as hot towels and menus. We were offered champagne, orange juice and sparkling water but I got an apple juice for my daughter.
Yes, I was flying in Business Class with my 3 year old. As I travel all the time for work and leisure, she got used to flying from an extremely young age.
Something else I noticed as soon as we boarded was how sleek and spacious the design of Fiji Airways new Flagship Business Class suites are.
We gave our meal and drinks orders before take-off then we were taxiing out to the runway.
The Safety Demonstration had the theme of Fiji’s culture, wildlife and preserving its nature – a fitting safety demonstration for the airline.
Soon after take-off, the Flight Attendants came out with our drinks. There was a lovely, well-rounded selection of alcoholic drinks including spirits, liqueurs, wines, beers, champagne, non-alcoholic selection of soft drinks and juices, teas and coffees available throughout the flight. I ordered a Dry Ginger Ale as well as a cup of Peppermint Tea – as I am tea and coffee crazy! My drinks came with a bowl of bar snacks.
Straight away, I was super comfortable, flicking through the In-flight Entertainment options, sipping on my drink.
I used the time before my food arrived to check out every bit of the Business Class suite. I have to say the Luxurious Leather Collins Aerospace Super Diamond Business Class seat design is exactly that – elegant, luxurious and spacious.
A very well thought out product which fits perfectly with the service.
The Business Class cabin is a 1-2-1 configuration with all seats having aisle access. The seat pitch is 60-62 inches. There is a 17 inch Personal Entertainment screen. The seat has 3 pre-programmed settings (upright – used for take-off and landing), a semi-reclined position and a fully lie-flat bed. There is also a screen that allows you to control every element of your seat to customize it to your taste. There are 2 USB ports, a power point, headset jack and a small entertainment system control if you prefer not to use the touch screen. There are 3 small storage areas, 2 armrests (1 is adjustable on the aisle side of the seat), and 2 spaces at your feet to place small pieces of hand luggage.
Now, for the meal service. Within the first 30 minutes of the flight, I was given my beverages with the bar snacks. Soon after, the entrée was served. I started with the Tuna Terrine served with fresh salad and lemon wedges and a glass of champagne. Main course had the Roast chicken with root vegetables and salad. This also came with the bakery selection of linseed loaf, cumin spiced bread roll and sourdough bread. Dessert was Panna cotta or fresh fruit platter served with tea and coffee. However, all the beverages were available throughout the flight.
After lunch, I reclined my seat into the fully lie-flat bed, just to test it out and for the novelty of trying out all the features of this beautiful business class product.
At this point, there was about 40 minutes left of the flight, so soon enough it was time to pack up and be seated for landing.
I go to Fiji about 4-5 times a year for both work and leisure and I have to say, experiencing this level of comfort and luxury on a flight from Sydney Australia to Nadi Fiji is unsurpassed.
Fiji Airways have definitely been extremely intentional with their Brand New A350-900 aircraft and their new Business Class product and service that are primarily serving the following destinations: Fiji to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sydney and Auckland (at the time of writing this article).
This is an exceptional way to fly to Fiji and really encompasses elegance, luxury and comfort, even in just a 3 and ½ hour flight.
